Why your name has power

The forgotten art of introducing yourself

I went to a new dentist a while ago. His work was fine, but I found myself wondering why he hadn’t introduced himself — just started working on my teeth and talking about the weather.

Then, I started working with a new body worker. Though her technique is amazing, she didn’t introduce herself when I first met her at her office.

Recently I hired a bookkeeper. When I met her in person… well… see a pattern? No introduction. So I took the initiative to introduce myself, then she did likewise.

These may seem like minor things, but I got curious about why this kept showing up in my world. It made me think about my own work with clients.

I’ve always been intentional about introducing myself the first time I meet a new client. The initial greeting holds an important energy exchange.

Though my new clients certainly know my name when we first meet, I don’t assume that they already know about me or read about me on my website.

With the dentist and bodyworker, it felt like there was a gap that never closed — an energetic hole that left me feeling a bit confused and overlooked. There was also a bit of a power differential.

Yes, I knew their name because it was on their business card/website/building. But they missed an opportunity to formally say their name, and for me to introduce myself too.

The person providing the service should be the one to set the tone for the relationship.

Plus, it’s the polite thing to do.

If you work with clients, this is one small but important aspect of setting a safe container of support. The connection we set at the start — even with a simple exchange of names through an introduction, sets the foundation.

If you give presentations or speeches, this is also a prime opportunity to introduce yourself and set the tone for your event.

Did you know that your name has a vibration? When you say it out loud during an introduction, it grounds and centers you. The spoken sound is an offering of yourself that sets something in motion. It’s an exchange that you initiate, giving the other person the opportunity to put their name in the space by introducing themselves.

Next time you’re in a position of meeting someone new, I invite you to err on the side of introducing yourself. See if you can feel the energy exchange during the introduction.

Let’s keep the conversation going

How do you create a space of welcome and connection when you first meet someone? Have you ever noticed when someone doesn’t introduce themselves? How did that make you feel? I’d love to hear from you! Share in the comments your thoughts or any questions.
